چکیده

II Declaration I declare that the work described in this dissertation is, except where otherwise stated, entirely my own work and has not been submitted as an exercise for a degree at this or any other university. Abstract The exponential growth of the Internet and the increasing demands put upon Web servers has created the need for a scalable clustered Web servers. In this paper we attempt to analyse the important issues facing the implementor of a clustered Web server. The issues of TCP handoff problems, dynamically generated Web documents and how a Distributed Shared Memory paradigm might be used to optimise a clustered Web server. We analyse several clustered Web server architectures, and use traces from Web servers in a simulation of several of the Web server architectures to further examine the caching strategies of those architectures. Finally some recommendations are put forth for further research into areas that have been identified as critical to clustered Web servers. IV Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisor Christian Jensen for his support and guidance throughout the course of this project. I would also like to thank all my friends, family and classmates for their friendship, support and help during the year.

An Analysis of Geographical Push-Caching

Most caching schemes in wide-area, distributed systems are client-initiated. Decisions of when and where to cache information are made without the beneet of the server's global knowledge of the usage patterns. In this paper, we present a new caching strategy: geographical push-caching. Using the server's global knowledge and a derived network topology, we distribute data to cooperating servers....

Cruz Efficient Data Distribution in a Web Server Farm

High-performance Web sites rely on Web server “farms”—hundreds of computers serving the same content—for scalability, reliability, and low-latency access to Internet content. Deploying these scalable farms typically requires the power of distributed or clustered file systems. Building Web server farms on file systems complements hierarchical proxy caching.1 Proxy caching replicates Web content ...

Trace-Driven Simulation of Document Caching Strategies for Internet Web Servers

Given the continued growth of the WorldWide Web, performance of Web servers is becoming increasingly important. File caching can be used to reduce the time that it takes a Web server to respond to client requests, by storing the most popular les in the main memory of the Web server, and by reducing the volume of data that must be transferred between secondary storage and the Web server. In this...

Achieving Load Balance and Eeective Caching in Clustered Web Servers

This paper considers policies for distributing requests in clustered Web servers, wherein multiple server machines are conngured to function as a single high(er) performance Web server. We evaluate various load distribution policies with respect to both their ability to achieve good load balance (the primary goal) and also to their impact on the eeec-tiveness of per-machine caching.
